My first meal in New York City! I have heard so many amazing things about the food in NYC so I was incredibly excited about coming over here. Dirt Candy in particular is a vegetarian restaurant and came as a recommendation that did not disappoint.
I’d suggest checking out their website to get a feel for the place. My favourite part is where it says: “Anyone can cook a hamburger, leave the vegetables to the professionals”. This place is brilliantly and unashamedly a vegetarian haven.
Now this is where it gets interesting, I went here with four carnivores and I had no idea how they would react. There was a lot of talk about having a quick bite here before we move on somewhere else and grab a “real” meal… Long story short, they were impressed and full enough after the meal that there was no other food consumed that night.
I’d describe the place as contemporary and fun which you can see by sampling one of the amazing vegetable based cocktails (trust me they were a lot better than I make them sound).
In terms of food – just wow! We tried pretty much everything but I’ll give you my highlights from the menu:
- Korean Fried Broccoli – basically it’s crack in broccoli form
- Shanghai Shoots – shanghai shoots with fermented black beans and crème fraiche
- Tomato – tomato cake with smoked feta
Actually, everything was brilliant! I have to admit, even I was surprised at how good they were able to make vegetables taste. For our vegan friends there were plenty of options and NYC is fairly vegan friendly anyway so you’ll be absolutely fine.
Honestly if you’re looking for something a little different, definitely check Dirt Candy out.
